Heleen Rodiers (April 5, 1976, Turnhout, Belgium) lives and works in Brussels. She obtained her Masters Degree in Visual Arts, with a major in photography, from Hogeschool Sint-Lukas in Brussels, in 1998. In her final year she was awarded the prize for best graduating student (“laureaat”). She has had exhibitions at Sint-Lukas Gallery and CC Hasselt, and her work is part of the permanent collection of Kunst in Huis.
After graduation Heleen Rodiers has developed a personal visual language with the city as her biggest inspiration. She photographs when traveling trough the city by tram, underground train, or bus. She takes her pictures quickly with a 35mm camera and reversal film.
The resulting slides aren’t the end product, but the start of a process. The title of her work, “Project”, can be taken literally: Every image is the result of a projection. With an image from the past, something new is created, slowly and thoughtfully. It’s an exercise in rephotographing that doesn’t recreate the existing image, but takes that image and makes it into a new reality.
Heleen Rodiers also works as graphic designer at AGENDA Magazine, a cultural guide for Brussels, and reviews photo exhibitions.
